Hill's R.V.'s seeing a business boom Tom Eastman - Aug 8, 2017 - The Conway Daily Sun
CONWAY — Hill’s R.V.’s, locally owned by Craig and Sharon Hill, — is riding the boom: the baby boom, that is.
Baby boomers are fueling the upswing of new and used recreational vehicles, both nationally and locally, Sharon Hill said.
“We get a lot of people stopping by who are looking to soon retire in a year or two, and they are out there in our lot, exploring what we sell,” she said.
But along with the boomers, dealers report they also are seeing a new trend: younger couples buying RVs. Gleaming new vehicles equipped with features such as outdoor second kitchens, fireplaces and space enhancing slide-outs, in campers priced below $30,000 have played a role in attracting the millennial market, according to national media reports.
“Sales last year were pretty incredible — we had not seen figures like that since the early 2000s, and this year it has been very good. Low gas prices make all the difference in the world,” said Hill.
Hill’s has been known for its friendly and knowledgeable service of Winnebago products since 1985.
Originally located on Route 16 in Conway, the company has been at its spacious facility in Redstone near Crest Auto World since 2006.
Company President Craig Hill said he is proud of his company’s reputation within the industry, having won the Winnebago Industries “Circle of Excellence” Award for high quality sales and customer service satisfaction 26 times.
“We always stand behind what we sell, offer competitive pricing on the sales lot, and have a solid service department ” said Hill, son of the founders of the business, Ellanore and the late Barry Hill.
Hill’s features a large indoor showroom, a parts and accessories department stocked with all the RV essentials, and a service department staffed with factory-trained technicians who collectively total more than 40 years of RV experience.
“People come from all over the country, from as far away as California, Texas and Florida,” said Craig. “They may be traveling around the country, and they come here for parts or service and end up trading for a new RV.”
From a 2009 recession low of 165,700 units, national RV sales are expected to top 472,000 this year — a record high, business reports say.
RV shipments in the first quarter of 2017 were up 12 percent over last year, with motor home sales up more than 30 percent, according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association.
RVs have become more fuel-fficient in recent years, Hill said. “We have a Mercedes diesel-powered machine that gets 16 to 17 mpg,” he said.
A tour of a Winnebago Vista, on sale for $139,007, displays all the bells and whistles, from a gas range, air conditioning, swivel passenger front seat, television, shower and queen-size bed along with twin beds.
Price tags for new vehicles range from $19,000 to $200,000. Prices for used vehicles start at $1,500.
